With a good tripod and plenty of battery power, you can do IR with any Nikon DSLR (and Canons, too). But even if it's doable, it might not be practical which was my main point.
I usually do IR with with an old D1, or D70, both of which have had their internal filter packs removed. This gains me 7 stops of increased IR sensitivity and getting IR images hand-held is a breeze. I even can do IR shooting with an IR heater as "light" source - hand-held.

If I purchase a D200 for myself, it will be for just that purpose. Ripping out the filter pack is a simple operation and there is no need for replacing the internal filter. I want to be able to use any IR filtration I fancies thus I put the IR filter(s) on the lens, I don't want to be stuck with a fixed internal filter. Removing the internal filter makes the camera near-sighted, but so does adding an IR filter over the lens, and the changes largely cancel out."
