Harris, the 80-400 will give you trouble when shooting moving subjects. I had both the 80-400 and 300/4 AFS at the same time, and I must tell you that I tended to focus the 80-400 manually when it came to action much of the time as it hunted quite a bit and slowly at that. I was also less enamored with the image quality of the zoom, and finally sold it.
Either the 300/4 AFS or 70-200 AFS/VR with TC-14e will give you an excellent lens for action, with significantly better optical quality and focusing speed. While you can use a TC-20e, the results suffer with regards to contrast and sharpness -- both work quite well with the TC-14e though. I was actually happy enough with the quality of the 70-200 AFS/VR and TC-14e that I sold the 300/4 and carry the 70-200 AFS/VR and TC-14e when I'm going to be shooting handheld -- it's a fabulous lens, and without a doubt the best telephoto zoom I've had the pleasure to use.
